Comparison of grow th and immunity of hybrid and backcrossing progenies between Northern snakehead Channa argus and Taiwan snakehead C.maculate

Abstract: Juvenile Northern snakehead Channa argus(A),Taiwan snakehead C.maculate(M)and their reciprocal cross and backcross hybrids(MA,AM)with body weight of(68.34±6.26)g were raised in cages disposed in the same pond for 90 d.Then feeding,growth performance[survival rate,specific growth rate(SGR),totalweight gain,and food conversion ratio(FCR)],immunity[activities of lysozyme(LZM),acid phosphatase(ACP),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and glutathione peroxidase(SGH-PX),and contents of hydroxyl radical,and malonaldehyde(MDA)]and digestion(pepsin,trypsin,lipase,and amylase)were studied in snakehead AA,MM and their hybrids including AM(AA♀×MM♂),MA(MM♀×AA♂),AMA(AA♀×MA♂),MMA(MM♀×MA♂), MAA(MA♀×AA♂),MAM(MA♀×MM♂),and MAMA(MA♀×MA♂)to breed new snakehead which was characterized by high survival rate,good growth,better disease resistance and high feed conversion efficiency.The results showed that the MM showed significantly higher survival rate(82.33%)than the snakehead in other groups (P<0.05).There was totalweight gain of 8908 g in MA and 8732 g in MM,higher than that in the other groups. MA had higher SGR(0.84%/d)than other snakehead.Food conversion ratiowas found to be 1.22 in AA,1.22 in MM and 1.31 in AM,significantly lower than other snakehead(P<0.05).There were higher ACP activities in MA(1.637 2 U/mL)and AM(1.613 8 U/mL)than in the snakehead in other groups,higher SOD activities in AA(163.10 U/mL),AM(159.09 U/mL)and MA(155.03 U/mL)than in the snakehead in other groups,lower contents of MDA in AA 7.47 nmol/mL)and MA(7.48 nmol/mL)than in the snakehead in other groups,and higher SGH-PX activities in MA(443.09 U/L)and MM(410.45 U/L)than in the snakehead in other groups, without significant differences in LZM activity and hydroxy radicl contents in various groups(P>0.05).The findings suggested that the order of growth and immunity heterosis is ranged as hybrid groups(MA,AM)>parent groups(MM,AA)>backcross groups(AMA,MMA,MAA,MAM),in which MA is optimal for wide culture.
