Abstract: Juvenile white -leg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were stocked into a pond with a bottom covered with plastic sheet in a circulating system at a rate of 97.5 × 10^4 individuals/hm^2 and cultured in Tianxiang Fisheries Co. , Ltd, in Tianjin, China in 2005 and 2006. The water quality was monitored in the culturing ponds during the culture period. The yields of 13 700 kg/hm^2 and 16 500 kg/hm^2 were achieved in the ponds with a bottom covered with plastic sheet in 2005 and 2006 while the yields of 7 800 kg/hm^2 and 5 250 kg/hm^2 were obtained in the control ponds without plastic sheet in the same years. There were higher mean and minimal dissolved oxygen levels, and 1 -2 ℃ higher in water temperature in the ponds with a bottom covered with plastic sheet than those in the control ponds without plastic sheet. The annual average biomass of the phytoplankton in the experimental ponds was 110. 03,97.36 mg/L, and zooplankton 61.45,53.80 mg/L. In the control ponds, however,the annual average biomass of the phytoplankton was 48.20,43.16 mg/L, and zooplankton 36.48,57.34 mg/L. There were no significant differences in the chemical factors in the experimental and control ponds. The water quality was improved by the circulating water and there was no need for extra water in the ponds with a bottom covered with plastic sheet during the whole culture period.
