Abstract: A observation of fertilized eggs and embryonic development was carded out in Ciona intestinalis under light microscopy. The eggs with a special cell called test cell have a diameter of some 110 μm before fertilization and 160 - 170 μm after fertilization. It takes 16 - 18 h from fertilized eggs to demembranated larvae at a water temperature of 20℃. The swimming period of the larvae lasts about 2 h. The period from the settlement to the contraction of the tail is approximately 3 h. It takes probably 4 h from the contraction of the tail to the beginning of metamorphosis which needs about 7 - 9 d to complete the metamorphism.
