Sargassum
pallidum
as a typical representative of brown seaweed is widely distributed in the coastal areas of China including the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, and is one of the earliest Marine Traditional Chinese medicines. Brown seaweed
S.pallidum
has several effects including resolving phlegm, softening and firmness, eliminating galls and nodules, promoting diuresis and detumescence, and has been used in the treatment of phlegm edema, gall, beriberi, adverse urination and other diseases. In recent years, there have been a lot of research on the methods of extraction and purification of polysaccharides from
S.pallidum
, as well as the biological activities of antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antitumor, antibacterial, hypolipidemic and immunomodulatory. The purified polysaccharide of
S.pallidum
was primarily composed of fucose, galactose, xylose, glucose, mannose and arabinose. In this paper, the extraction, separation and purification of polysaccharides from
S.pallidum
, as well as pharmacological activities are reviewed. Given of the problems existing in the research, suggestions for the future development of the optimization of the method of extraction and purification of the polysaccharide, the research and development of the polysaccharide preparation, and in-depth research on the fine structure of the polysaccharide are put forward, so as to make some contributions to further development and utilization of
S.pallidum
.
