Abstract: The embryonic development of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus was observed at water temperature of 12,15,18,21, and 24 ℃ to evaluate the biological zero and effective accumulative temperature for the embryonic development. The embryos were found to develop normally at water temperature between 12 and 24 ℃, with rate hatching of 86.2% at 15 ℃, and below 50% at 24 ℃. Death of the gastrula was appeared at 27 ℃. The gastrula stage, heart - bud stage, kupffer's vesicle formation stage, and tail - bud formation stage developed rapidly with increase in water temperature between 12 and 24 ℃, with short incubation period. It was found that 15 ℃ was the optimal water temperature for the embryonic development of Japanese flounder with upper limit of 24 ℃. The biological zero was found to be 7.41 ℃ and effective accumulative temperature was calculated to be 534.32 ℃ · h for the embryonic development of the flounder.
