Abstract: The effects of salinity on feeding, growth, survival and oxygen consumption of juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were studied at a temperature of (16±1)℃. In the 30 day experiment, the minimal survival rate of 26.7% occurred in fresh water, and the survival rates were all 100% in salinity of 8, 16, 24 and 32.The fish had the best growth at a salinity of 16, and followed at a salinity of 24, 8 and 32.The feeding conversion efficiency was the same case in the growth, i.e. the highest one was in a salinity of 16, and then in turn were in salinity of 24, 32, and 8.The highest oxygen consumption rate was in a salinity of 8, and the lowest one was in a salinity of 16. Reduction of metabolic cost of osmoregulation was attributed to the best growth in a salinity of 16.
