Abstract: White, green and purple sea cucumber Apostichopusjaponicus Selenka with body weight of some 5.3 g were cultured in a water tank at light intensity of 20 000, 1000, 25-50, 5-10 lx and 0 lx(dark, control group)at water temperature of 14-16 ℃ for 90 days to investigate the effects of light intensity on growth, digestion and immunity of the sea cucumber. The results showed that light significantly affected growth rate, and activities of digestive enzymes and immune-related enzymes(P<0.05).The intense light or complete darkness was not conducive to the growth of the sea cucumber, specially the former. There was significantly higher amylase activity in white sea cucumber than that in green and purple sea cucumber at light intensity of 5-10 lx at which the white sea cucumber had the maximal specific growth rate(SGR).The maximal SGR and protease activity were observed in green and purple sea cucumber exposed to light intensity of 25-50 lx, indicating that the protease activity was basically consistent with the growth rate. There was the same effect of light intensity on intestinal acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activities in different colored sea cucumber, the maximal activities in the green and purple sea cucumber under the light intensity of 25-50 lx, and in the white sea cucumber at 5-10 lx, which is consistent with the specific growth rate. The superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity was shown to be different among the three colored sea cucumber, the maximal activity of SOD in dark conditions. The findings indicated that the best growth performance of sea cucumber was found under 5-50 lx light intensity.
