Abstract: Reactive oxygen species(ROS)-dependent bacterial killing mechanisms of Haliotis discus Hannai hemocytes were quantified in vitro by luminol dependent chemiluminescence (CL) assay to determine whether the mechanisms were affected by organophosphorous pesticide, parathion. In vitro immersion of the hemocytes in parathion for 1 hr or 12 hr inhibited ROS production and resulted in dose-dependent suppression of CL. The phagocytic index and phagocytic percentage of the hemocytes immersed in parathion to phagocytize yeast cells were assayed. The results indicated that the lower-concentration of parathion (0.5, 5,10 mg/L) enhanced the activities of Haliotis discus Hannai hemocytes to phagocytize yeast cells, while the high-concentration of parathion (20, 30, 40 mg/L) inhibited the activities of Haliotis discus Hannai hemocytes to phagocytize yeast cells.
