Abstract: Juvenile carp (\%Cyprinus carpio\%) weighing 100 g were fed a semipurified diet supplemented with 3% of fresh fish oil (Peroxide value, POV, 0.64 mmol/kg) or oxidized fish oil at POV levels of 29.64, 59.40, or 94.69 mmol/kg for 15 weeks. Oxidized fish oil decreased hepatopancreas vitamin E contents (\%P\%<0.05) and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) (\%P\%>0.05) and microsomal oxidative stabilities (\%P\%<0.05). These trends were even worse when oxidized degrees of fish oil increased. With the oxidized fish oil used in the diet, fat content in hepatopancreas was elevated (\%P\%>0.05) and kidney somatic indices (KSI) and spleen somatic indices (SSI) were enhanced (\%P\%>0.05). In hepatopancreas of carp fed diet with oxidized fish oil, pronounced histological abnormalities were noted including liver cell fibrillation and degenerated and melted cristae of mitochondria. These changes reveal that oxidized fish oil destroyed antioxidative function and normal histological structure of hepatopancreas.
