Abstract: The removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus wastes and multiplication in biomass in green algaChlorellavulgariswere studied at various nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. The results showed that-N and-P were removed effectively by the green alga for 72 h cultivation, the removal efficiency of above 90% at concentration of 2.0-6.0 mg/L for-N, the removal efficiency of 94.6% at concentration of 0.590 mg/L for-P, and with the maximum value of 2.657 mg/(L·d) in-N and 0.445 mg/(L·d) in-P. Also, the alga had increase from 1.33×107cells/mL to 2.61×107cells/mL in cell density when the concentration ofN was increased from 0.8 to 10.0 mg/L in 72 h cultivation. In the culture medium, the pH value in the wastewater was changed from 8.19 to 9.74 during 72 hours cultivation, indicating that cultivation ofChlorellavulgarisin wastewater would have great potential in water purification and algal production.
