Abstract: Karuma shrimp ( Marsupenaeus japonicus ) were deprived of food for 0 ( Group 0 ), 1 ( Group 1 ), 2 ( Group 2), 3 ( Group 3 ), 4 ( Group 4), 5 ( Group 5 ), and 6 ( Group 6) days, and then refed. Approximate composition analysis of the shrimp showed the shrimp starved had low body weight and lipid levels and high ash and moisture contents 6 days following food deprivation. However, there was no significant difference in protein contents. At the end of the experiment, the body weight in each test group was similar. During the course of growth recovery, the specific growth rate was significant in variation. The food consumption increased significantly in each test group, then gradually decreased to the level of Group 0. The food conversion efficiency gradually increased on the whole. The results showed that there was completely compensatory effect in the recovery growth in the shrimp following starvation and that the compensatory effect mainly resulted from significantly increase in food consumption during the recovery growth.
