Abstract: The growth was examined in common sea- perch Lateolabraxjaponicus weighing (40. 71 ± 2.92)g starved for various periods and refed for 40 days at 26 - 28 ℃. The results showed that the fish refed after 5 day starvation (S5) had better growth than the fish in the control group. The fish refed after 10 day starvation (Sz0), however, had slower growth than the fish in the control group without significant difference. There were reduction in protein, fat and energy levels and increase in ash and moisture levels in the fish starved for 15 days (S15). The fish refed after different periods of starvation had the similar approximate composition and energy, returning to the level in the control group. The standard metabolic rate of the starved fish decreased as the starvation proceeded, and then returned to the level in the control group after refeeding. Also, different damages were found in the stomach, intestine and liver of the fish starved for different periods, being recovered after refeeding, indicating that complete compensatory growth occurred in group S5 and group S10 in the course of recover)- growth, but the partial compensatory growth in group S15, It is suggested that the compensator), growth in common sea -perch be attributed to increase in food intake (FR) and food conversion efficiency (FCE).
