Abstract: Conventional antimicrobial drugs cannot prevent and cure aquatic diseases effectively with the rapid development of aquaculture. One of the alternative approaches is to use probiotics as biological control agents in aquaculture. Lactic acid bacteria, Vibrio, Bacillus and Pseudomonas have often been used in the cultures of fishes, shrimps, crabs, mollusks and live food. The possible mechanisms of bacterial action are analyzed. A rationale for screening probiotic bacteria is introduced and directions for further study are proposed.
