Abstract: The ecological environment was surveyed and assessed in marine ranching area at Zhangzi Island in 39°0′9″-39°0′58″N and 122°55′1″-122°55′51″E where, an artificial reef is planed to be disposed on June in 2010. The results showed that the area surveyed had water depth value of 33-37 m and Secchi disc value of 4.14 m, the hard substrate bottom, mild flowing velocity with an average of 31 cm/s, average chlorophyll a of 1.68 μg/L, inorganic nitrogen level of 4.50 mmol/L, dissolved oxygen level (DO) of 10.22 mg/L, phosphorus level of 8.10 mmol/L, and COD of 0.2097 mg/L, within the government standards of the First Class Marine Water Quality. There were 8 zooplankton species, with dominant species ofSagittacrassa,Paracalanusparvus, andOithonasimilis, 11 phytolankton species, with dominant species of green algaSkeletonemacostatumand diatomNitzschiadelicatissima, and nektons fat greenlingHexagrammosotakii, cloudy bennyEnedriasnebulosus, and yellow goosefishLophiuslitulon. The findings indicate that the area is good in water quality, and suitable habitats for many living things, so the optimal for artificial reef construction.
