Abstract: The community structure of zooplankton and characteristics of environment were investigated in 15 sampling sites in the Jinghe River system, as the largest tributary of the Weihe River basin, Northwest China, in autumn of 2012, and analyzed by canonical correspondence analysis using Canoco 4.5 software. It was found that there were 42 zooplankton species belonging to 28 genera, with dominant rotifers accounting for 85.72% in the species composition, followed by protozoa (7.14%) and copepod (7.14%). The zooplankton had a density of 0.9-36.0 ind./L, with an average of 8.5 ind./L, and biomass of 0.001 1-0.042 5 mg/L, with an average biomass of 0.009 7 mg/L. There were eight dominant species of zooplankton in Jinghe River system, with average Shannon-Weiner species diversity index(H) of 2.38 and Evenness index (J) of 0.75. Clustering analysis based on zooplankton density revealed that the zooplankton in every section of Jinghe River systems was divided into four groups. The canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the community structure of zooplankton in Jinghe River system was primarily affected by the water environment including water temperature, altitude and channel width. Water quality evaluation indicated that the water in Jinghe River belonged to β-middle polluted, and a simple zooplankton community structure based on the community structure of zooplankton, according to the species diversity index. Thus, it is necessary to strengthen the ecological management and to reduce the nonpoint source pollution in Jinghe River.
