Influence of extracellular organic matters of two m icroalga species, Fe(Ⅲ)and Cu(Ⅱ)on photodegradation of phenol

Abstract: The photolysis of phenol in preparation of a photochemical reactorwas investigated in extracellular organic matter solutions(EOM)of two alga species Tetraselmis chui or Nitzschia closterium under simulated sunlight irradiation,and the influence of coexistence of Fe(Ⅲ)with Cu(Ⅱ)on the photolysis of phenol was also studied in seawater.The results showed that the photolysis process of phenolwas found to be conformed to pseudo first order kinetics equation in EOM and coexistence solutionswith different concentration of Fe(Ⅲ)and Cu(Ⅱ).The photolysis rate constant of phenolwas found to be decreased with increase inmicroalgae EOM concentration.When the microalga EOM solution was added with Fe(Ⅲ)or Cu(Ⅱ),however,the photolysis rate constant of phenol was increased,indicating that the inhibition ofmicroalga EOM was reduced with increase in the Fe(Ⅲ)and Cu(Ⅱ) concentrations.Furthermore,the photolysis of phenol was further promoted in the coexistence ofmicroalga EOM with Fe(Ⅲ)and Cu(Ⅱ).
