Effects of morphometric traits on body weight in mud crab Charybdis japonica

Abstract: Fourteen morphometric traits including forehead width(X1),carapace length(X2),carapace width(X3),body height(X4),full carapace width(X5),fixed finger height of the claw(X6),meropodit length of the claw(X7),fixed finger width of the claw(X8),fixed finger length of the claw(X9),meropodit height of the first peraeopod(X10),meropodit length of the first peraeopod(X11),first obital margin width(X12),second obital margin width(X13),and body weight(Y)were measured in ninety-six wild mud crab Charybdis japonica randomly sampled in Laizou Bay.The morphological characters were used as independent variables and body weight was used as a dependent variable for path analysis.The relationships between these traits and body weight were evaluated by correlation analysis and path analysis.Path coefficients(Pi),determination coefficients(di) and correlation index(R2) were calculated by path analysis.The results showed that all three correlation coefficients between each morphometric trait and the weight showed very significant difference(P〈0.01) levels.The path coefficient analysis revealed a truthful relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable.The path coefficients(Pi)of carapace length(X2),carapace width(X3),and second obital margin width(X13) to the body weight all had significant differences.These attributes were very indicative of determining the body weight,in which the carapace length(X2) as a key factor weighted the most(1.060**)to the body weight.But the direct effect of the second obital margin width(X13) to the body weight is negative.The diversification of determination coefficients analysis was consistent with that of path.Judging from the result of high correlation index(R2=0.886),the main variables(X2,X3,X13) had been selected.The morphometric traits(X2,X3,X13) with significance are used to establish the multiple regression equations,which are Y=10.028X2+1.962X3-3.662X
