Abstract: Effects of temperature(12,16,20,24,and 28℃),salinity(20,25,30,32,35,and 40),pH values (4,5,6,7,8,9,and 10),and sizes on oxygen consumption and its diurnal rhythm were studied in ascidian Molgula manhattensi.The results showed that the oxygen consumption was found to be increased with rising temperature within 12-20℃and to be decreased in 24-28℃(P<0.01).The oxygen consumption was increased with increasing salinity in 20-32,and decreased at a salinity of over 32(P<0.01).The oxygen consumption was shown to be increased with pH value from 6 to 8,and to be decreased beyond the range(pH<6 and pH>8)(P<0.01).The individual oxygen consumption rate was found to be higher with the augment of body weight,the oxygen consumption rate being increased with increase in wet body weight.There were two peak values in diurnal oxygen consumption rate:9:00-12:00 and 3:00-6:00 in the morning.
