Abstract: In this paper, the characteristics of distribution and variation in sea surface temperature(SST) and chlorophyll - a( Chl - a) concentration was retrieved in East China Sea by MODIS from July of 2002 to December of 2007. The distribution of SST and Chl - a in East China Sea was found to be characterized by regional and seasonal changes. Annually, periodical changes in SST and Chl - a concentration were found, and spatially, the SST was found to increase from coastal sea to off sea, and to have great fluctuation in temperature between north and south. In the chlorophyll - a concentration, however, there was a decrease trend from coastal sea to off sea, indicating that this distribution of chl- a in the East China Sea was involved in the SST, river current, and various seasons. The long - term variations in SST and chlorophyll - a concentration were discussed, and had given new insight into oceanic primary production and marine ecological environmental research.
