Abstract: The influence of extension of the summer closed fishing period on yield of hairtail ( Trichiurus japonicas) and small yellow croaker(Larimichthys polyactis) was studied by Ricker population dynamic pool model on the data collected from demersal trawling surveys in the East China Sea region from 2000 to 2006. The results showed that the average body weight and total catch of hairtail and small yellow croaker were found to increase significantly following the implementation of the prolonged summer closed fishing period. When the summer closed fishing began early half a month annually, extending from 1 June to 16 September, the total catch and average body weight of the hairtail increased by 9.35% and 21.61%, and 5.89% and 14.45% for the small yellow croaker, respectively. The catch and average body weight of hairtail and small yellow croake were found to be 13.87%, 8.71% ,and 41.21%, 26.44%, respectively, when the summer closed fishing period extended from 1 June to 1 October. So we suggest that the current duration of summer closed fishing be prolonged as long as possible to strengthen the fishery resources in the East China Sea region.
