Abstract: The body wall of sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus was studied by histological and histochemical methods. The body wall consists of epithelium layer, connective tissue layer, muscular layer and coelomic lining. The epithelial layer includes a piece of thin cuticle and 2 - 3 layers of epithelia. There are loose collagenous fibrils in the connective tissue layer. Muscular layer is made up of smooth muscle, and the coelomic lining comprises of a simple squamous epithelium. The body wall contains glucide and protein besides fat. Acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activities are found in the connective tissue layer and muscular layer.
