Comparison of salting processing efficiency of an elite kelp variety,Dongfang No.7 Saccharina japonica with other kelps

Abstract: The salting processing efficiency of an elite kelp variety, Dongfang No.7 Saccharinajaponica was compared with two control kelps (Benniu and Lianza No.1) in order to test the adaptation of Dongfang No.7 in two kelp processing plants n the coastwaters of Rongcheng, Shandong Peninsula and Lüshun, Liaodong Peninsula.The processing parameters including fresh weight/mu (FW), yields of salted blade bases (YSBB), blade stripes (YSBS), ratio of quality products to raw kelp (PQPRK), ratio of wet to dry weight, temperature of seawater at harvesting, and leftover of processing bits and pieces (YLP) were measured at four time points during harvesting and processing period. The Dongfang No.7 in coastwater of Rongcheng seawater had FW of 285.95 t/hm2, YSBB of 13.70 t/hm2 and YSBS of 144.71 t/hm2, with average PQPRK of 55.1%. While the Dongfang No.7 in the coastwater of Lüshun had FW of 417.60 t/hm2, YSBB of 21.45 t/hm2 and YSBS of 225.87 t/hm2, with PQPRK of 58.6%. There were higher production efficiencies in Dongfang No.7 in the coast seawater of Rongcheng and Lüshun than those in the two control kelps, Benniu and Lianza No.1. It is the optimum that Dongfang No.7 harvesting and processing is conducted in early June in coastal waters of Rongcheng, Shandong Peninsula, and in mid-June in coastal waters of Lüshun, Liaodong Peninsula.
