Abstract: The effects of the mixture of seaweed fucoidan combined with hawthorn extracts on hypercholesterolemia were investigated in mice fed high-fat diet. The fucoidan extracted from seaweed Kjellmaniella crassifolia and Undaria pinnatifida was mixed with hawthorn extracts in the ratio of 1∶1 and intragastrically administrated in the mice with body weight of 150-170 g for 28 days. The results showed that the mice fed the mixture at low and high doses had significant decrease in the levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and atherosclerotic index (AI) (P<0.05). In vitro analysis of antioxidant enzyme activity revealed that there was significantly higher glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in the mice fed the mixture at low and high doses (P<0.05). The findings indicate that the mixture had good effect on hypercholesterolemia, without dose-dependence.
