Abstract: The heavy metal ions must be removed from the water for heavy metals in waters can threaten the health of humans and other organisms. Adsorption is considered to be one of the most promising technologies for the removal of heavy metals from water. The use of green, economical and recyclable natural materials to adsorb heavy metal ions in waters is a hot research topic. In recent years, hydrogel materials have been widely used in the treatment of heavy metals in water due to their three-dimensional network structure and good metal ion adsorption performance. This article reviews the research and application progress of various types of natural-based hydrogels, and summarizes their preparation methods and adsorption efficiency, and classification of hydrogels. Finally, the future research projects and application prospects of natural polysaccharide-based hydrogels are prospected, and suggestions on the innovation of natural polysaccharide-based hydrogels in terms of structure, preparation methods, source of preparation materials, application fields, and environmental protection are proposed, aiming to provide scientific references with the research and application of adsorption materials.
