Abstract: Beaks as one of most important hard tissues in cephalopods are characterized by stable morphology, resistant erosion and easy availability and recording of much good information on biology and ecology and have been widely concerned on research of age, growth, population, feeding ecology, migration and habitat of cephalopods at home and abroad. In the past years, the analysis and application of cephalopod beaks are mainly focused on its morphology and microstructure. Recently, the study of micro-chemical analysis, especially stable isotope analysis of cephalopod beaks, has become increasingly popular for more and more biologists or ecologists with the continuous innovation and progress of geochemical techniques. We reviewed the current progress on micro-chemistry of beaks including cell and chemical compositions, and analysis technology of trace elements, and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in cephalopod feeding ecological assessment, habitat reconstruction and the migration route remodeling to provide fishery ecological information on cephalopods.
