Abstract: The community structure and quantity distribution of phytoplankton were analyzed in waters of western Laizhou Bay in spring and autumn of 2016 in order to understand the response mechanism of the evolution of phytoplankton community to the changes in ecological environment in the coastal zone. A total of 64 species of phytoplankton were found, including 57 species of diatoms, 6 species of dinoflagellates and 1 species in Chrysophyceae, with dominant species Rhizosoleniastolterfothii, Ditylumbrightwellii in spring, and dominant species Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus sp., Rhizosoleniasetigera in autumn. Eurythermic species, nearshore inner bay, were shown to be major ecological types, with the phytoplankton density of 79.96×104 ind./m3 in spring, and 574.54×104 ind./m3 in autumn. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that N/P ratio, pH, active phosphate level and permanganate index were the main environmental factors affecting the distribution of dominant species of phytoplankton in spring and that N/P ratio, temperature and inorganic nitrogen were the main factors in autumn. The findings provide management information with ecological environment protection of waters in western Laizhou Bay.
