Abstract: Carotenoid levels in soft tissues including central mantle,margin mantle,gonad,gill and liver of triangle pearl mussel Hyriopsis cumingii were analysed and compared among individuals with different nacre colors.The results showed that there was(134.8±61.7)mg/kg total caroteniods content(TCC)in liver tissue,significantly higher than that in gonad,margin mantle,gill and central mantle(P<0.01).No difference was found between the individuals with white color and the purple in margin area of the nacre(P>0.05).In the same pearl mussel,TCC in the posterior margin area of the nacre with purple color was higher than that in the anterior with white color(P= 0.01).It seems that the liver is the most important tissue in transformation and accumulation of carotenoids and the TCC difference in margin mantle is a main factor affecting nacre color of triangle pearl mussel.
