Abstract: The fishing logbook data of Belize fishing fleets in waters near the Republic of Palau Islands in 2005(January to December) and the difference in the catch rates of bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus) and yellowfin tuna(Thunnus albacares) with different setting times and the difference in the moonlight days(8th-22nd,lunar calendar) and the no-moonlight days(23rd-7th,lunar calendar) were analyzed by the use of ANOVA to evaluate the effects of lunar phases and setting time on the catch rates of bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna, and to determine the optimum time of setting the longline to increase the fishing efficiency. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the catch rates between moonlight days and the no-moonlight days. However, there was significant difference between two different setting times for the catch rates of bigeye tuna. For the catch rates of yellowfin tuna, however, there was no significant difference between two different setting time, indicating that the lunar phases did not show significant effect on the catch rates of bigeye tuna or yellowfin tuna. The optimum time of the long line setting was found to be 02:00-08:00(local time) to increase the catch rates of bigeye tuna.
