Abstract: The bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp.CI4 was cultured in a complex marine growth medium(VNSS) and the concentrated cell-free bacterial supernatant was prepared. The antibacterial activity in the supernatant was assayed by a disk diffusion method. It was found that an extracellular component of CI4 strain strongly inhibited the growth of fouling bacterial strain S1 isolated from rock and strain CI4 itself.Crude extract obtained by precipitation of the supernatant of CI4 with 70% saturated(NH4)2SO4 had partial heat-sensitive,sensitive to proteinase K and pronase, with relative active stable within the pH range from 5.0 to 9.0.The antibacterial protein was purified from the crude extract of CI4 by Sephadex G-200 gel filtration chromatography,DE-cellulose 52 ionic exchange chromatography and Microcon centrifugal ultrafiltration tube(nominal molecular weight cut off of 30 000) fractionation.A single band with the molecular weight of 37 200 was detected upon SDS-PAGE.
