Abstract: The batch and fed -batch culture methods were employed to investigate the effects of culture mode on growth of alga Nitzschia closterium. The results showed that the different fashions of fed - batch culture had distinct effects on growth and production of protein and polysaccharide in the alga. When the alga was fed - cultured with invariable fedvelocity, the cell density, contents of protein and polysaccharide at the 10^th day were (1. 901 ± 0. 043 ) × 10^7 cell/mL, (42.82 ± 4.03 ) mg/L, and ( 95.68 ± 3.99 ) mg/L, respectively, equal to 2.29 times, 1.60 times and 2.15 times of batch culture, respectively. When the feeding rate of fed -batch was variable, the biomass of the alga at the fed - rate of 0. 167 was about 4.83 times higher than that cultured by method of batch culture. Likewise, the contents of protein and polysaccharide increased by 6.23 times and 6.12 times, respectively.
