Abstract: The effects of heavy metal ions Cu^+2 , Cd^2+ , and Zn^2+ on nitrosification and nitrification in sea water were studied by changes in concentration of NO^-2 - N from ammonia - oxidizing bacteria. It was found that concentration of NO^-2 - N significantly slowly increased at 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L Cu^2+ and Cd^2+ and 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L Zn^2+ compared with control group. The order of nitrosification inhibition from highest to lowest arranged as Cu^2+ 〉 Cd^2+ 〉 Zn^2+ ,which is consistent with stability of sulfates. There was no significant difference in decrease in concentration of NO^-2 - N at low concentrations of Cu^2+ , Cd^2+ and Zn^2+ compared with control group. However, significant inhibition occurred when the concentration of Cu^2+ and Cd^2+ was 5.0 mg/L. There was no effect of Zn^2+ on nitrosification and nitrification. The order of nitrification inhibition from highest to lowest was arranged as Cu^2+ 〉 Cd^2+ 〉 Zn^2+.
