Abstract: Ninety-nine strains of epiphytic fungi were isolated from 10 sea weed species such as Ulva lactuca, Ulva pertusa, Enteromorpha sp., Monostroma sp., Chondrus ocellatus, Sargassum sp., Sargassum thunbergii,Halymenia sinensis, Dumontia simplex ,and Porphyra sp. collected from the intertidal zone of Dalian in 2002 and 2003. Antagonistic tests performed by the indicators of seven species of bacteria and three species of fungi using overlay technique revealed that 31.3% of the isolated strains showed antimicrobial activity. The percentages of antagonistic fungi varied with sea weed species and collection time. There were more marine and territorial fungal strains inhibiting the growth of bacteria than those inhibiting the growth of fungi. In 31 strains of antagonistic fungi, three strains inhibited the growth of pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum in shrimp, and 22 strains of antagonistic fungi are Penicillum spp..
