Abstract: The acute and chronic toxicity of povidone-iodine to rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was studied to evaluate influence of povidone-iodine on survival, growth and reproduction of the rotifer. The result showed that the LC50of this chemical was 2.25 mg/L in 24 h, and 1.99 mg/L in 48 h, with safe concentration of 0.47 mg/L by Turubell formula. The life-span, life-time fecundity, number of broods per female and number of young per brood of the rotifer were found to be decrease with the increase in povidone-iodine concentration, and the development of pre-reproduction was extended with the increase in povidone-iodine concentration, with significant difference between the high concentration group(0.5 mg/L) and the control group and between the other groups (P<0.05). The intrinsic rate of increase(rm),net productive rate(R0) and finite rate of increase(λ) were shown to be decrease with the increase in povidone-iodine concentration, and the mean generation time(T) was increased with the increase in concentration. There were significant difference in rm,λ, and T between high povidone-iodine concentration group (0.5 mg/L) and the control group and between the other groups (P<0.05). The findings indicated that the low concentration of povidone-iodine (0.1 mg/L) showed no significant effect on survival and development of pre-reproduction of the rotifer (P>0.05), but had significant impact on growth and reproduction of the rotifer(P<0.05).
