Abstract: The burrowing behavior of Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum with shell length of 13,17,23 and 25 mm was investigated in sediments with a ratio of sand to mud of 1∶0(Group A),3∶7(Group B),1∶1(Group C),7∶3(Group D)and 0∶1(Group E)at water temperatures of 13-15℃ in laboratory conditions to explore the effect of different substrate with various sand sizes on burrowing behavior of Manila clam. The results showed that the maximal burrowing rate was observed in the Manila clam in Group A in 48 h,significantly higher than that in the other groups(P<0.05),and without significant difference in the substrates containing mud(P>0.05).In the same substrate, however, the smaller clams had rapid burrowing speed and higher rate than the larger clams did. Statistical analysis revealed that effects of shell length, substrates and both interaction on burrowing rates of clams were significant(P<0.05).A linear negative correlation between total organic carbon level(TOC)and burrowing rate in 48 h(P<0.01)indicated that the particle sizes and chemical components of substrate influenced burrowing speed of the clam. The findings provide reference with intertidal mudflat culture and behavior of Manila clam.
