Abstract The running - in wear test for materials of crankshaft journal against bearing shell of S50MC marine diesel engine has been conducted by a ring - on - disc tester in this paper. The effect of performance of running - in wear for AlSn40 alloy bearing shell under different axial loads has been studied by the complicated analysis of friction coefficient, wear loss, and surface roughness. There were the certain differences in running - in wear prop- erties of AlSn40 alloy bearing shell under different axial loads. When the test load was less than 40 N or more than 60 N, its running in wear properties were poor. When the test load in 40 -60 N, its running in wear properties were best. Therefore, AlSn40 alloy bearing shell will obtain a good running - in wear properties in the middle axial load.
