Abstract Karyotypes and morphological characteristics were analyzed and compared in wild diploid, triploid and tetraploid individuals of oriental weatherfish Misgurnus anguillicaudatus collected in Honghu lake, Hubei province, China. 1 ) The chromosome number, karyotype and fundamental number were determined to be 2n =50, 10m +4sm +36t, NF =64 in diploid, 3n =75, 15m +6sin +54t, NF =96 in the triploid, and 4n = 100, 20m +8sm +72t, NF = 128 in the tetraploid. 2) There were no significant differences in five structured meristic parameters between diploid and tetraploid oriental weatherfish, but significant differences in three parameters in the diploid and the tetraploid ones. 3) Principal component analysis revealed that such morphological differences were attributed to the different lengths of the posterior half of the body in specimens with different ploidy. (4) Cluster analysis showed that diploid and tetraploid Oriental weatherfish were morphologically similar, but the triploid remotely related to them.
