Abstract: The ossicles in the tube feet is one of the important basis for sea urchin classification. To study the types and quantities of ossicle in six kinds of sea urchin species including Strongylocentrotusintermedius, S.nudus, Anthocidariscrassispina, Glyptocidariscrenularis, Mespiliaglobules, and Hemicentrotuspulcherimus and four hybrids of sea urchin including S.intermedius♀×A.crassispina♂, S.intermedius♀×H.pulcherimus♂, S.intermedius♂×H.pulcherimus♀, and S.intermedius♀×A.crassispina♂, their tube feet were observed by light microscope and analyzed. Result showed that ten sea urchin species or hybrids have five types of ossicle, including C, S, rod, trigeminal and hippocampus types; There were significant differences in the types and quantity of ossicle; Hybrid sea urchins did not generate new ossicle type. They have both parents ossicle types and the ossicle quantity tends to be the mean value of both parents. The findings indicate that ten species or hybrids of sea urchin can be compeletely distinguished by the types and quantities of ossicle, which provide a theoretical basis for sea urchin classification and a reference for hybrid species identification.
