Simulation of impact of different racing to fish on fishery resources in the East China Sea under the summer fishing moratorium system based on OSMOSE model

In order to understand the impact of racing to fish on fishery resources in the East China Sea, the effects of different racing to fish on fishery resources were simulatively investigated in East China Sea and surrounding waters (120°-130°E and 26°-35°N) with summer fishing moratorium covered with 19 major economically important species including small yellow croaker Larimichthyspolyactis, by OSMOSE ecosystem model under three scenarios: one non-competitive fishing scenario (FSa) and two competing scenarios after summer fishing moratorium(FSb) and at the beginning and ending of summer fishing (FSc). The results showed that there was negative impact on the fishery resources in the East China Sea in FSb and FSc, with the higher nutrient level and biomass of resources in FSb than that in FSc. The high yield and good economic benefits were observed in FSb and FSc in the short term, and the biomass was seriously damaged by FSc, which was difficult to maintain high yield in the long term. Large fish species were more sensitive to the increase in fishing pressure and the different distribution time of fishing pressure, while the biomass of small species was increased under racing to fish, especially under racing to fish in FSc. In the case of inevitable and widespread racing to fish in the East China Sea, FSb had less negative impact on the fishery resources in the East China Sea than the FSc did, so it is recommended to control the racing to fish after the fishing moratorium in FSb.
