Abstract: Red carp with average body weight of 3.6 g was reared in plastic tanks with mud, sands and impermeable membranes installed at the bottom in a laboratory to evaluate the bottom matrix effects on water quality and growth of the fish. The results showed that mud substrate showed significant effect on the stability of the water quality, with lower ammonia content along with the testing proceeded. The red crucian carp was found to have higher SGR in the mud tank than those in the other two tanks(P<0.01).Variance test showed that there were significantly lower ammonia and NO-N contents in the mud sediments than in the other sediments(P<0.01);there was significantly higher chlorophyll a in the mud sediment than those in impermeable membrane, and gravel sediments(P<0.05).The fish had significantly poor growth in the impermeable membrane tank(P<0.01).
