The effects of dietary Chinese herbal medicines on growth and digestibility in red sea bream Pagrosomus major juveniles

Abstract: Red sea bream Pagrosomus major juveniles( body weight (22. 18 ± 1.44) g)were stocked into tanks of each 80 cm × 40 cm × 50 cm and fed the diets containing Chinese herbs including haw, malt, and Chinese angelica at temperature of (22 ± 0. 5) ℃ for two months. The Chinese herbal medicine additives were added in powder and decoction types at a rate of 1%, 2% or 3%. The body weight gain and feed coefficient were measured at end of the experiment, and total apparent digestibility of the diets, apparent digestibility of protein and protease activity in stomach, intestine and liver were determined in a 20 day interval. The results showed that there was significantly better growth in the fish fed the diets containing Chinese herbal medicinal additives than that in the control group. The juveniles fed the diet containing 2% powder and decoction had the maximal growth, the relative growth rate being 39.43% and 47. 16% higher than those in the control groups(P 〈0. 01 ). Feed coefficients were 0. 10 lower in the treatment groups than that in the control group ( P 〈 0. 01 ). There were higher protease activity in stomach, intestine and liver and apparent digestibility of protein in the fish fed the diets containing Chinese herbal medicine additives than those in the fish in the control group, especially during the stages 2 and 3.
