Abstract: The advances on taxonomy, biochemistry, physiology, ecology and culture methods of the genus Dunaliella were reviewed in this paper. Nearly 30 species have been described in this genus, among which D. salina is much attracting commercial attention due to the richest plant sources of β-carotene as a useful sources of pro-vitamin A. The method for biological production of carotene is briefly introduced.
