Abstract: With the improvement of the level of aquaculture intelligence and increasing concerns about fish welfare, there were an increasing number of reports and studies on the physiology and behavior of fish.Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine,5-HT)as a major neurotransmitter and neuromodulator at central and peripheral sites is involves in regulation of various behaviors in fish including aggression, feeding, cognition, social hierarchy, and emotional regulation mediated by the corresponding receptors. This paper reviews the effects of 5-HT and its receptor on physiology and behavior, such as feeding, immunity, reproduction, aggression, social hierarchy, emotional regulation and cognitive ability in fish.In this paper, the research status of 5-HT and its receptor in basic research and industry is analyzed, and suggestions for future research are put forward, including further research on the mechanism of 5-HT action and its application in the plasticity of fish behavior in different environments,as well as the basic functions of 5-HT receptor and regulation of fish behavior and physiological response,in order to provide reference with research of fish behavior and theoretical basis for improving the level of aquaculture intelligence.
