Abstract: Aquatic germplasm resources are an important material basis for fishery development. There are more than 500 species of echinoderms in China, among which sea cucumbers and sea urchins are important aquaculture species. Since the construction project of aquatic primary and improved species started in the 1990s, economic echinoderm germplasm resource protection has made great progress in China, and an economic echinoderm seed industry system with Chinese characteristics has been initially established. However, there are still many problems and challenges at different aspects. In this article, we summarized the distribution, identification, evaluation, protection and innovation of germplasm resources of economic echinoderms (sea cucumbers, sea urchins), and put forward suggestions on the construction of economic echinoderms national aquatic product original breeding farms, germplasm resource testing and evaluation system, germplasm resource bank and information sharing platform, as well as sea cucumber and sea urchin “integration of breeding, reproduction and promotion”. These efforts are valuable to promote the protection of echinoderm germplasm resources in China, and the physical efficiency and green development of the seed production and aquaculture industries.
