Abstract: Sex control of fishes is always critical in aquaculture. In some species, monosex population farming can significantly improve aquaculture benefits because of sexual growth dimorphism. Many fish species have strong plasticity, and sex reversal is even part of life cycle in some species.Certain hermaphrodite species are males or females at the beginning of life and become females or males then.Research on sex determination genetic structure facilitates control of sex ratio and implementation of breeding programs.Mammals and birds have highly conserved major sex determining genes that control a conserved genetic network pathway that is responsible for sex determination and gonadal differentiation.Unlike mammals and birds, fish has vastly diverse in sex determination mechanism. Here, we briefly describe the diversity of fish sex determination and introduce the application of sex control in aquaculture by taking Nile tilapia Oreochromisniloticus and turbot Scophthalmusmaximus as examples.
