Family establishment and estimation of genetic parameters of growth traits of “Laizhou red” strain in Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum

Abstract: In order to produce a strain of “Laizhou red” of Manila clam Ruditapesphilippinarum(referred to as clams), 11 patrilineal semi-sib and 33 matrilineal full-sib families were established in wild individuals of “Laizhou red” strain of Manila clam using the nest design.The results showed that each family had the average absolute growth shell length of(6.32±0.67)μm/d and shell height of(6.69±0.80)μm/d in the larval stage, with the obvious growth advantages in E1 and I2 families.The average absolute growth was found to be(61.77±38.42)μm/d in shell length and(61.03±31.07)μm/d in shell height in each family at the juvenile stage, and the G3, F1, F2, B2 and B1 families had obvious growth advantages.During the cultured period of indoor, each family juvenile shells had the average absolute shell length growth of(123.93±48.05)μm/d and absolute shell height growth of(86.17±36.71)μm/d, with the obvious growth advantages in G3 families.In the outdoor culture period, the average shell length and shell height absolute growth of the family were(54.27±38.61)μm/d, and(38.69±18.49)μm/d, and I3, G3, K3, J1 and H2 families had obvious growth advantages.The heritability of shell length and shell height of 100 days “Laizhou red” clam were(0.35±0.09)and(0.34±0.10), respectively, and the genetic correlation and phenotypic correlation were(0.983 3±0.009 5)and(0.990 4±0.012 2), respectively.The heritability of shell length and shell height of the 200 days “Laizhou red” strain were(0.19±0.10)and(0.18±0.11), respectively, and the genetic correlation and phenotypic correlation were(0.930 2±0.005 4)and(0.924 9±0.008 1), respectively.The “Laizhou red” strain had moderate heritability for the growth traits.The findings indicate that the growth traits of “Laizhou red” clam have moderate heritability and great potential for breeding, especially, G3 family is featured by fast growth and can be used as core breeding families.
