Digestion of cyanobacteria treated by pressure or not by bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis

Abstract: To explore the effect of pressure on the structure and digestion of cyanobacteria including Microcystisaeruginosa (>99%) and M.wesenbergii treated by pressure by bighead carp Aristichthysnobilis, bighead carp with body mass of (81.0±2.1)g, (103.0±3.1)g, and (130.0±3.4)g were reared in a 100 L tank at water temperature of (26.3±0.2)℃ and fed cyanobacteria treated with 0.7 MPa for 1 minute and no pressure, and then the morphology and digestibility of the cyanobacteria were observed in the intestine of bighead carp before, during and after feeding by scanning electron microscope and by ash method. The scanning electron microscope observation showed that the colloidal junction between cells was obvious and the edge was blurred before pressure treatment, and that colonial structure was disrupted and the edge was clear after treatment. Compared to the untreated group, a significant disruption of cyanobacteria cells was observed in the gut and feces of bighead carp in pressure treatment group, indicating that the pressure improved the digestion of cyanobacterial cells in the fish. The bighead carp with body mass of 103.0 g had higher digestibility (83.2%) of cyanobacteria treated by pressure than digestibility of cyanobacteria without pressure treatment (65.7%)(P>0.05), indicating that the pressure treatment technology promoted the digestion of cyanobacteria by bighead carp. The findings provided theoretical and technical support for water purification fishery framework, and guided the future work of water purifying in China.
