Abstract: The biological characteristics of squid Illex argentinus were studied in about 6094 samples collected from Chinese squid jigging vessels in the high sea waters of Southwest Atlantic from January to April in 2009.The results showed that the squid mantle length was found to be ranged from 148 to 307 mm with dominant size between 200 mm and 260 mm,accounting for 86.5% of the total number, and body weight from 76 to 586 g with majority of 150-300 g(78.7%).The relationship between mantle length and weight was expressed as the equation W=1.2×10^-4L^2.6779.The relationship between mantle length or body weight and time was described by the exponential function during the fishing seasons as Lt=207.54e^0.0013t and Wt=181.52e0.0046t respectively.About 56.8% of the squid was found to be at maturity of stage II,and the first mature squid(52.0%) had mantle length of 244.7 mm and the stomach fullness of degree II.
