Abstract: Ammonifying rate, nitrosifying rate, nitrifying rate and denitrifying rate were determined by measurement of conversion efficiency and accumulating rate of nitrogenous matter by ammonifying bacteria, nitrobacteria, nitrifying bacteria and denitrifying bacteria in the surface 0~1.5 cm of pond sediment from the intensive fish culture ponds. The results showed that the ammonifying rate, nitrifying rate, nitrosifying rate and denitrifying rate of bacteria in pond silt were significantly affected by the biomass and population composition of bacteria, physio-chmical characteristics of pond silt and water quality. Therefore, it was necessary to take some measures to improve the environmental conditions of fish ponds, in turn, to increase the conversion rate and accelerate the mineralization of organic matter and nitrogen recycling to reduce the sedimentation of organic matter and pond silt.
