Abstract: This paper discribes the results of the chemical and biological surveys of Lake Yanchi located in Jinnan Region, Shanxi Province, China, during 1982 ̄1990. The water type of the lake is NaMgSO 4Cl or MgNaClSO 4 subtype, the salinity 4.95 ̄311.5 g/L, pH value from 7.5 ̄10.6, alkalinity 2.5 ̄22.4 mmol/L. Fifty three species of phytoplankton, 47 species of zooplankton, 5 species of zoobenthos and 1 species of fish were found in the lake. As far as plankton, the dominant species are Dunaliella salina, Navicula cryptocepha, Navicula spp ., Cyclotella meneghiniana, Oscillatoria tenuis, Chlorella rulgaris, Oocystis lacustris, Artemia sp. , Brachionus plicatilis, Moina mongolica, Apocyclops royi and ect. The chemical and biological features as well as utilization of the resource in the lake were discussed, and compared with the other saline lakes.
