Abstract: The shell length(X1),shell height(X2),shell width(X3),and live body weight(Y)were measured individually in brown and white 9-month-old Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis, and effect of the shell characters on live body weight was evaluated by path coefficients and synthesized coefficients. The results showed that there were very significant larger shell length, shell height, shell width, and live body weight in white scallop than those in the brown scallop(P<0.01).The statistical analysis revealed that the correlation coefficients between shell shape traits and the live body weight were all significantly different(P<0.01).The maximal effect of shell length on the live body weight was observed in the brown scallop, shell height showing the minimal effect on the live body weight. In the white scallop, however, shell height had the maximal effect on the live body weight, shell width showing minimal effect on the live body weight. The multiple regression equation to estimate live weight was expressed as Y=-16.081+0.168X1+0.288X2+0.577X3for the white scallop, and Y=-12.085+0.281X1+0.129X2+ 0.402X3for the brown scallop. This study provides theoretical evidence for selective breeding of Japanese scallop.
